Quote of the Day

Just read this amazing quote on PastorHacks:

“I say to you, this morning, that if you have never found something so dear and precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren’t fit to live.

You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be, and one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid.

You refuse to do it because you want to live longer. You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you’re afraid that somebody will stab or shoot or bomb your house. So you refuse to take a stand.

Well, you may go on and live until you are ninety, but you are just as dead at 38 as you would be at ninety.

And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.

You died when you refused to stand up for right.

You died when you refused to stand up for truth.

You died when you refused to stand up for justice.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
From the sermon “But, If Not” delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church on November 5, 1967.

Quote of the Day

“Leadership is relieving people of their excuses as to why they can’t or shouldn’t do what needs to be done.”

Pastor’s Quote of the Day

Here’s a quote I can literally live or die by, I suppose…

“If you’re going to tell people the truth, you better make them laugh; otherwise they’ll kill you.”
- George Bernard Shaw

Quote of the Day

Tonight during Steve’s message at Riverview, he made a little aside that was clearly the most profound thought of the night:

“Makeup is an interesting thing. As my grandfather used to say, ‘if the barn needs painting, paint it.’”
-Steve Sommerlot

Gotta love an Iowa farmboy.

Dinner with Larry

Last night, a handful of us had the opportunity to have dinner with Larry Osborne, who is one of the early innovators of the multi-site / video venue church concept. I had the most amazing piece of steak. Yum.

During dinner, Larry made an interesting statement about life as a hippie Christian in the 70s. This is a paraphrase:

“While studying our bibles, we all dressed alike, drank beer, smoked cigars, and threw in a few cuss words to be cool. We thought we were so hip and original.”

Sound familiar?

Quote of the Day

“I don’t want to be blind because then Jesus will have to rub mud on my face.”

-Coley (my 4 year old)

From one of the best named blogs out there: Veterinarians: The Other White Coat:

Diarrhea is like pornography. It’s hard to define, but you’ll know it when you see it.

Quote of the Day

Sorry for the slow blogging. I have been slammed with message and building stuff. For now, this quote (via John) will have to suffice:

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

-Douglas Adams

Quote of the Day

Via Best Week Ever:

Paula Abdul is reportedly “in talks” to perform at the Super Bowl next month. Fingers crossed, because a crazy lady on pills running around the 50 yard-line and crying while “Opposites Attract” plays on a loudspeaker would undoubtedly be the awesomest halftime show ever.

Awesome quote from 43 Folders:

“Stress comes from dissonance. When two things in your mind can’t be resolved and you start thinking you’re going to be stuck with the incongruity forever, you stress.”

For some reason, this made me think about hidden sin in our lives.
