My Goals for 2010

Last week, I spent some time asking myself, “Am I a good steward of my time?” After wrestling through my work, family, and personal priorities, I came to the conclusion that in most areas I was doing pretty good. However, there were a few things in my life that should be high priority but weren’t getting the time they deserve.

So, without further ado, here are some of my goals for the year in no particular order. I say “some of” because I am keeping some to myself…

Protect my AM time – I am more productive in the morning than any other time of the day. Therefore, I am going to protect my mornings with the following strategies:

  • No reading email until after lunch. I already do this with my work email, but my personal email is becoming just as much of a time hog.
  • Giving my mornings to my most important tasks for any given week.
  • In particular, I’ll try to spend an hour writing each morning (whether that be for the blog, my book, my sermons or other stuff).
  • No checking Facebook until I have read the Text Project and done my hour of writing.

Read – I have so many books I want to (and need to) read but I naturally put off reading until I have completed my to-do list. Unfortunately, my to-do list is never done so I never read. Reading recharges me and helps me broaden my knowledge, but I haven’t been able to get to it. So, here is my reading strategy:

  • Pick “the right books” to read for the seasons I am in (as well as the seasons Riverview is in).
  • When I’m not in a teaching season, spend a morning a week reading.
  • Post little book reviews on 24 books this year (2 / month).

Finish my book by August 1 – I have not put in enough time to work on my book this year, but that needs to change. Here’s a few simple steps I am going to take:

  • Make sure some of my daily writing time is given to my book each week.
  • Nuff said.

Take advantage of my kids’ seasons of life – People always say that your kids grow up before you know what happened. I don’t want to miss this season. Here are the things I am going to do:

  • Identify what season each of my kids is in
  • Find a way to join them in that season

Don’t get fat – They say the average person puts on 1-2 lbs a year. Last year, I put on 2 lbs. Not good…if I do that every year, things will not be pretty. I don’t really like to exercise, but my plan is to not get fat by:

  • Riding my bike or doing the gazelle weekly (seriously, that’s a big goal for me)
  • Lift weights a couple times a month
  • Only eat fries once a week

OK…that’s enough for now. Didn’t mean to write such a long post but since a couple thousand people now know my goals, I may need to actually take them seriously.
