Why I’m a Penguins Fan

Pens
The number one question I have received the past few weeks is, “how can you live in Michigan and be a Penguins fan?” It’s a relatively short story, so I figured I’d post it here.

When I was a little kid, my parents bought me a Franco Harris jersey. I really don’t know why, since we were from Detroit, but they did. The 70s were a great time to be a Steelers fan and that began my fascination with Pittsburgh sports.

I wasn’t introduced to hockey in any substantial way until I went to MSU. At that point, I naturally gravitated to the Penguins. Those where the Mario Lemieux / Jaromir Jagr days, and again I picked the prime season to be a Pittsburgh fan. Grace and I even went to the semi-finals game when Mario came back from time off (it was either his back problems or his cancer…can’t remember which) to score twice in the first minute of the game.

Unfortunately, living in Michigan, I am only able to follow them online until the playoff season each year. And the last two years have given me lots of hockey to watch.

So there you have it.

How good to read about another one of your finer characteristics. My loyalties to the Pens (et. al.) is simply that I was born and raised in Pittsburgh! They need the game of their lives tonight… My best to Grace and the gang.
