“The American church is built on Jesus’ words: ‘Love the Lord your God with all heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.’ We’ve pimped the second commandment by defining our neighbor as “someone like us.”
Some companies spend 50% on research and development. How much of our church budgets are spent on innovation?

Brian’s church partners with one in South Africa. They took polaroids of their people, wrote down prayer requests on them and sent them over there. They asked the church in South Africa to pray for their church. This flipped around how most churches think about working with churches in third world countries.

“Only an American who is addicted to works righteousness would say, ‘God let’s you fail so that you can win.’ Actually, He may just let you fail. Is that OK?”

“Failure is not an option, it’s an absolute necessity. Therefore, we should create a culture that allows for failure…Fail aggressively, not passively.”

Here are a couple great quotes about church gtoeth from Stacy Spencer:
“When we started getting the stuff, we started losing who we were.”
“Where we got messed up is when we started listening to church people.”
“Be careful not to promise in the showroom what you don’t have in the storeroom.”

Dan and I are finally in Texas. As part of recording this conference for myself, I am going to blog the stuff that strikes me.
Right now, we’re listening to Tim Keller. He’s teaching on Jacob wrestling with God. Here are his big points:
1) Go after God for blessing.
2) Let God lame you.
These two always go together.

Each year, I am able to attend a couple conferences where I get to learn and grow as a pastor and leader. I cherish these times and so I am pretty particular about the ones I attend.
When I heard about innovation3, it sounded like the kind of conference that would fit the bill. I shot two of my friends an email to see if they thought I should attend. These friends (Todd Rhoades and Linda Stanley) are people I trust immensely and they said I should go for sure.
That was good enough for me, so I signed Dan and I up.
Then, a few months later, I come to find out that Todd and Linda are running the conference. Sneaky. They didn’t think that was important enough to mention.
Tomorrow, bright and early, Dan and I will travel in some flying chairs to the great country of Texas. One jam-packed day later we’ll be back in Michigan.
Anyhoo, I am stoked about the conference and I wanted to encourage you to stayed tuned to this blog. I’m going to do my best to liveblog the conference so you can “virtually attend.” Also, tune in to my Twitter feed for a running commentary of our trip and the conference. You could follow Dan too, if you wish, but he’s not nearly as interesting as me.
If you are going to be at the conference, hit me up. You can buy me lunch.
