Eat It

Somewhere in the neighborhood of a decade ago, I did this video tribute to Michael Jackson’s “Eat It.” It was the first video we ever made for our youth group and it was a hit around these parts. Now, I laugh at the production quality, etc, but I thought I’d post it at my own expense.

I referred to it this past weekend at Riv and promised I’d throw myself under the bus by posting it, so here it is . Enjoy.

Creative Nutjobs

Rivset-Sbatt-1

If you’ve been to Riv, you know we have some crazy uber talented artists. Kristie (our Creative Director) oversees a cast of nutjobs called the Black Shirt Club (or “Bacon Satisfier Club” depending on who you ask). This group seeks to translate each message series into art. That means the set, the graphics, the program, the music, the lighting, the videos, etc.
We see this as vitally important because there are so many right brained people out there. We want the creative side of our services to communicate along with the more linear side into a cohesive message.

We also create art because we are made in God’s image and he is an artist himself.

Why do I bring this up?

Because I know there are artists out there who would like to help. Maybe you are good at making videos or sculpting or painting or photography or **insert your art form here***. We can use you! Just shoot Kristie an email at Kris...@RivChurch.com to let her know you want to help. Oh, and be prepared to show her samples of your work (we are pretty particular on quality).

Also, if you like to build things, we could use your help big time. Now that we are in the new auditorium, we are getting a little more ambitious in our set design. This last set took Nate a crazy amount of time to build and he is a volunteer. If you would like to help with that side of things, contact Nate at Nate...@RivChurch.com.

Tagging Rebel

Billy tagged me to do one of those meme things last week. Normally, I don’t do these but since it’s Billy I’ll make an exception. Of course, I’m going to be a rebel and change the rules.
Here are his rules and my edits:
1. Post the rules on your blog
2. Write 6 random things about yourself
3. Tag 6 people at the end of your post anyone who feels like doing it
4. If you’re tagged, DO IT and pass on the tag
Here’s my randomness:

  1. I drink too much Diet Coke and Diet Dr. Pepper
  2. I have a pair of skinny pants that I just barely fit into this week
  3. I have two Jesus bobbleheads
  4. I only like to write with one kind of pen
  5. I always match my belt buckle and socks to my clothes but no one ever sees them
  6. I do cartoon voices to entertain my kids

Afterward Q&A

This weekend I am going to be the target at a Q&A night at “The Afterward.”

So, if you need something to do Saturday Night, come to Riv’s service at 7ish then hang out afterward to listen to me squirm a lot, hem and haw a bit, and answer a few questions.

Politics Part 2

(via bob.blog)

This monologue by Craig Ferguson is absolutely brilliant. And just in case my previous post made you think I don’t care at all about the upcoming election or politics in general, let this video speak for me.

And my previous post still stands….I’m not telling you who I am voting for. :)

Just call me “Tarp”

According to the Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator, if she were my mom, I would be

Tarp Lazer Palin

Brilliant.

Politics

I have had a lot of people ask me recently who I’m going to vote for in the upcoming election, what my “political leanings” are, etc. I have had a few suggest I should at minimum blog about the upcoming election or at most teach a series at Riv.

That’s why I was so glad to read Mark Batterson’s interview with LeadershipJournal.net. He is a pastor in Washington DC and has to respond to these types of questions often. Here’s a great answer he gave to this question:

When someone new arrives at National Community Church, how do you encourage them to leave their politics at the door?

Loud silence. In a city that’s always talking about politics, it’s noticeable when we don’t talk about it. We want church to be a safe place to hear a dangerous message, and it’s not a political message. It’s the message of the cross. We’re very intentional about avoiding political stuff or anything that will distract from our core message. So, we’re screening our bulletin, we’re analyzing what we say up front. We keep it pretty simple. And I think that’s what’s really protected us from being distracted by the politics around us.

Here’s some thoughts on government I posted a while back.

Palin and Clinton

I was all excited about SNL starting up again this past weekend because I as hoping they would go all crazy with politics. I had read online that they were going to.

Nope.

The whole episode kinda sucked. Ironically, the best sketch was (you guessed it) political. Congrats to MadTV for doing a better Season Premier yet again.

Here’s the one good sketch on SNL. I love Tina Fey as Sarah Palin.

Radio Ads, Week 3

This is the last week of our radio ad campaign. You can hear the last ad on 5 area radio stations or right here:

This one is a bit personal, with me confessing my own hypocrisy to anyone who cares to listen. Pray that this ad draws people in and helps introduce them to Jesus.
