Kicking the Heart Out by Rogue Wave

Check this video (via Mark) out of an atheist’s perspective after visiting several different churches.

It reminds me of this book I am reading right now:

“I Sold My Soul on eBay: Viewing Faith through an Atheist’s Eyes” (Hemant Mehta)

And upon further examination, it appears there is a connection between this video and the book:

[...] 2 – Noel put up a post with a couple of videos that are very interesting.  An athiest ’sold his soul’ on ebay to a Christian and went to a bunch of different churches… (I actually heard about this months ago while listening to a podcast, from one of the churches the guy visited.) This is fascinating. [...]

    Noel,
Interesting that it seems that first guy is doing the same thing Hemant did. I’m glad you’re reading that book. When I read it I thought you might think it was interesting. I’d love to hear your thoughts when you’re done.

I thought the interview with Hemant was interesting. The biggest thing that he said that struck me was how he answered the criticism question. His response was that churches always seem to over-analyze scripture instead of discussing ways in which it is relevant to life. When he said this I found myself nodding my head in complete agreement. That is one of my biggest frustrations when I go back home (from college) and go to church – the teachings are not relevant to my life. Well, I mean they are, but how it is relevant is not discussed, rather what is is the analyzing and the, “…well if you look at this you can see where Paul (or whoever else) might have meant this…” Yes, it’s important to understand what is actually being said in the Bible, but if churches never discuss how what can be found in the Bible is relevant to our life, then how is anybody suppose to be anything but head-smart? Sometimes I think about it this way – you can know everything there is to know about CPR; where to push, how many reps, how to count, how to position the head, ect. But if you come across a person who is not breathing, unless you actually apply what you know, that person is going to die – all the knowledge in the world would not be able to save him/her without the application.
