My wife made a comment a few years ago that really struck me. She said:
“Halloween is the one time a year when perfectly modest girls can dress like sluts and it’s OK.”
I was reminded of this yesterday when we got a flyer in the mail from “Party America.” It was their annual catalog of costumes. My kids immediately dove in to look at all the great ideas. So, I sat down with them, aware that there might be a section on “slutty costumes” I would want to guide them away from.
What I didn’t realize was that “slutty” section would be labeled “Teen Halloween Costumes.” That’s right: “Teen.”
And when you compare the adult and teen sections, you notice only one difference: the age of the model. The costumes were essentially the same. In fact, in some ways the teen costumes were more provocative.
This just makes me upset on so many levels. I’m upset for the girls who feel they have to dress like this for Halloween. I’m upset for the guys who will struggle because the girls will dress like this.
1Peter 3:3 Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. 4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 5 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful.
I just realized I typed “slut” many many times. Sorry about that. Hopefully your porn software doesn’t flag this post.
