Noel’s Church Locator

Because there are so many college students and other transients in our church, we experience constant turnover. People graduate, get jobs, and move all the time. One of the most common questions I get is

“Do you know of a church in [INSERT CITY NAME] here?”

Most of the time, I don’t. Some of the time I do. This page is my best attempt at helping Riv people find a church when they move out of the Lansing area. Please note a couple things:

1) I am not “vouching for” every church on this list. Every one of them has a different flavor, leadership model, and differing doctrine on closed-handed issues. I have done my best to do a little bit of research on the churches that land on my locator, but often I am going on someone’s recommendation.
2) Whenever I am personally connected to a church or pastor, I make a note of this on the map. If there is no such note, odds are I haven’t personally met the pastor or attended the church. This may or may not be up to date as I meet a lot of people and only update this map when I have time to do so.

Click here to view my Church Locator.

Oh, and if you need to access this in the future, you can find a link to it on the sidebar to the right.

If you are unable to find a church on my locator, here are three places you can look:

1) Acts 29 – These are churches affiliated with Acts 29, a church planting network we work with.
2) Vision 360 – These are churches affiliated with Vision 360, another church planting network I have lots of respect for.
3) You can peruse the comments on this post for other churches recommended by people who visit this blog. If you have any churches you would like to add, please comment on this post with the contact info of any churches that you feel people may want to check out. The info I need is:

Church Name
Website
City and State
Denomination and/or Know Affiliations
Style
Any Additional Comments

I can’t promise I will add every church I hear about or that I will do so fast, but life is full of disappointments, isn’t it?

    We believe:
It’s OK to have doubts and ask questions.
It’s OK to sit back and observe and analyze.
It’s OK to disagree with things you hear us say.
Maybe you’re wondering who God is and how He might relate to you. Maybe you’re checking out the claims of Christianity, but aren’t quite sure how or if organized religion fits into your life. If that describes you, great! We’ve designed our weekend services so you can feel comfortable seeking the truth at your own pace, with no arm-twisting.

    noel-

i just moved to boston and my roommate and i are looking for a church. we are painfully coming to the realization that it’s way easier to find a good punk rock show than a church similar to riv or mars hill.

but we will keep looking and check out the suggestions on churchrelevance.com

I’m kind of surprised that the other Mars Hill isn’t in your list of churches. I know there are some doctrinal differences between Riverview and Mars Hill (the question of female leadership in the church comes to mind), but it still seems as though Mars Hill would be a great church for people moving to the Grand Rapids area (Ada Bible is good too). Then again, maybe the reason that it is not included in the list is that no one has recommended it thus far. If that is the case, then I would recommend it. I subscribe to the podcast and attended a service there earlier this year and have found it to be a great church.

  14. redheadmom Says:

This is a great idea. We tend to move every 3-4 years and one of the hardest things is finding a new church.

    Two churches for you –

Any Additional Comments: Being in the Live Music Capital of the World, many worship services are more focused on “performing” rather than “worshipping” our Father (something I think Dan Price always did well). The lead worship singer at Austin Christian Fellowship reminds me of the style of Dan Price at Riverview.

    Savannah Christian Church

    Willow Creek Association Church

    Their core strategy:
“To be a community of Christ-followers where non-Christ-followers want to belong.”

It’s held in the oldest, still used theater in America. The community includes children, senior citizens, college kids, homeless people, families…you name it.

    Church like Riverview.

In north Scottsdale, AZ I think folks would like Highlands Church. Couldn’t find the list of churches on your blog but if this is not on it you could add it.

    The Chapel
    http://www.chapel.org
    Grayslake, IL
    Non-Denominational-Christian

Contemporary services with Bible-based messages to empower people to live Christ-centered lives. The Chapel is a mult-site church in the Chicago-land Area. They currently have established (5) different campuses, and have aspirations of continuing to start more in order to change the heart of Chicagoland.

I attended Riverview on 6/22/08, and thoroughly enjoyed the service. I was visiting some friends that regularly attend. I have been attending The Chapel-Grayslake, IL-over the past 5 years and found many similarities, aspirations, and visions with Riverview. Our pastors visited some other churches that have been successful with multi-campus churches when they began to expand…there might be someone at The Chapel who could help provide guidance in Riverview’s mult-site vision.

If you would like any further details or would like the names of people to contact at The Chapel, please feel free to contact me.

    God Bless!!

    Charlie

Thornapple Valley Church in Hastings, MI
    http://www.tvcweb.com

Thornapple Valley Church is a place where everything is designed to help you and your family in your spiritual journey.

If you’ve never come to TVC, we encourage you to check out “what makes this place so different”. For many people, just one visit has changed their life.

Our vision as a corporate church is “summarized” in a single sentence:

“TO DEMONSTRATE AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANITY FROM THE HEART IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF ACCEPTANCE.”

At TVC we are convinced the Bible teaches us to live life in such a way that people see us for who we really are.

    No masks
    No facades.
    No religious charades.

  32. Emily Says:

    Hope Presbyterian Church
    http://www.hopepres.com
    Memphis, TN

Very similar to Riverview: free coffee and other goodies in the lobby, casual dress code, young pastors, innovative methods

I attended Sunday night’s “The Stirring” service, for which they have the following tagline:

“The Stirring is a worship experience that seeks to recapture the greatest aspect of the Church – its willingness to interact with culture, dwell in it and understand it, earning the right to speak to it and influence it (where needed).”

They have live artists painting pictures, great worship music and a conversational approach to teaching. Would definitely go back.

    Style: contemporary
Any Additional Comments: very casual and contemporary and chill. loud praise. weekend messages can be simple but still very applicable and encouraging. mid week services go deeper into the bible for christians looking for a little more depth in their sermons. they’re all about God and love and God’s love. :)

  36. Emily Says:

    Church Name: Heartsong Church
    Website: http://heartsongchurch.net
    City and State: Cordova, TN
Denomination: Planted by Christ Methodist Church of East Memphis
    Style: Contemporary
Comments: Modern worship, very laid-back atmosphere, but a huge fire for God throughout the sanctuary. The church is smaller than many in the area and is set back in the woods, which breeds a sense of peace while you’re there. The people I’ve encountered thus far have been so friendly and helpful. They have many small groups to choose from and lots of great events to pull in people from the community, giving them an opportunity to experience the love of Jesus through Heartsong’s staff and attendees. Their bedrock beliefs are pretty basic, but their central call is love.

Any Additional Comments: I have never actually attended this church, but I listen to their podcasts. College student friends of mine love it there, worship is intense, and there is great availability to become part of the community

Living Hope functions with three goals:
to worship God We believe that God alone is worthy of our praise and so our desire is to worship Him in all of our lives (our families, our jobs, our relationships, our church services, our budgets, our music, our possessions, and our priorities). Our desire is to glorify God by rejoicing in Christ’s saving work on the cross.
to reach the community We believe that God desires to draw more and more people into this enthusiastic and joyous life of worship and service to Him. For this reason, Living Hope Church will be committed to impacting the local and global community with the great news of Jesus Christ.
to grow as a family of faith Our desire is to continually grow in our knowledge of, devotion to, and passion for God. Growth happens in the context of community, not in isolation. For this reason, we commit ourselves to spur each another on toward a fuller, more passionate devotion to God.

    Non-denominaitonal
Similar to Riverview in preaching and music.
I attended The Shoreline for a few years when I lived in Southern California. The pastor is a great teacher, and the church is filled with amazing, Christ-following people.

Diverse, fun-loving, authentic community of passionate believers who want to be radically different than the crumbling world around them. One weekend every month they cancel all normal services & as a body go out and serve the community in some way together.

I’m pretty sure the senior pastor is Noel’s long lost twin. Sunday worship, and teachings are strikingly similar to Riverview. They too, serve coffee and have multiple opportunities for involvement within the church and community.
