Mezzo by The Seventy Sevens

As a home-schooling parent, this is one of the reasons why we send our kids to public school in second grade. No offense to anyone out there who home-schools all the way through, of course.

Two words:

Brilliant and Awkward

Of course, it wasn’t the world’s greatest journalism either, so it’s not all the kid’s fault. I suspect he has double the IQ of the woman interviewing him.

She Don’t Use Jelly by Ben Folds Five

DanPrice just posted two quotes by John Piper that struck me:

“Every night… let’s watch clean videos while the world goes to hell…”

“What’s driving me is that I really believe in hell and I really don’t want people to go there, if I can have any part of it.”

They reminded me of this quote by Charles Spurgeon:

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our dead bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned or unprayed for.”

What I Am by Ill Harmonics

OK…I have to break my slow blogging week with this beauty. It’s the worse iProduct I have seen so far.

Ishave1
It’s the iShave:

Congratulations on taking action to enhance your self-image. iShave will allow YOU to shave your back area and hard to reach areas without relying on the assistance of others. You now have the opportunity to remove hair when you want, not when others are available to help you.

So, here’s my question: In honor of the iPhone’s coming release, what is the worse iProduct out there, either real or fake? Post a comment with a link or picture if you have one.

St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley

It has been an extraordinarily slow blogging week for me.

Sorry about that.

I have been trying to knock out a lot of stuff before I leave town next week for a conference speaking / vacation deal with the family. I’ll try to stay in touch when we are out of town, provided I have internet access.

Thanks for the understanding.

Your the bestest.

Thanks to Michelle Malkin for reminding us that today is the 18 year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Blog Name
Emergesque

Blog Author
Stephen Shields, who not only writes this blog but is also the founder of faithmaps.org, where I stole the rest of this bio:

Stephen Shields is a Manager with USA TODAY, a consultant, freelance writer, and a frequent contributor to Next-Wave. Stephen serves on the Leadership Development Team of Grace Community Church in Fulton, MD and he and his wife also co-lead a ministry serving folks in Louisiana that survived Katrina and Rita called KatrinaGrace. Stephen received a M.Div from Grace Theological Seminary and lives with his wife Bethany and three daughters – Michaela Siobhan, Skye Teresa, and Alia Noelle – in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.

What is this blog about?
This blog is Stephen’s personal blog, where he posts most of his articles as well as thoughts on various faith related topics. He is not an “emergent” guy, but an “emerging” guy. If that distinction means something to you, then you’ll get why I like his stuff. He calls himself a “friend of Missional” and links to a site by the same name. I haven’t read the site, but I suspect you can learn more about Stephen by reading it.

Recently, he took a two month break from blogging and I didn’t realize how much I missed his writing until he stepped back in. Here’s his first new post, where he explains what he did during his break. Because he is newly back into the blogging scene, it’s hard to say “this is what his blog is about” because there is a subtle shift to the tone and only time will tell where it will go from here.

Why do I read it?
I have read Stephen’s blog for a long time now. Last year, he mentioned that he would be at the Multi-site Conference in San Diego. Feeling a bit like a stalker, I emailed him and asked if we could meet there. He was gracious enough to say yes and we sat down (with DJ joining us) for an hour or so and talked about plurality, Leadership Network, Church Planting, etc. He is a super smart guy and a great example of someone who is gutsy enough to ask tough questions, but always with a kind spirit. He is a great writer and you can read a lot of his articles on the sidebar of his site (including the 2007 Multi-site Leadership Report).

Lament

Cubs vs. Braves

This week there has been a lot death around us.

Two couples we know lost their pre-birth babies at around 26 weeks each. Our friend Katie lost her mom and just this morning a friend from Minneapolis stopped in at Riverview to visit because he is in town for his dad’s funeral. Ironically, one of the passages I taught on throughout this weekend (on a completely unrelated topic) is this one:

Lamentations 3:19-26
The thought of my suffering and homelessness
is bitter beyond words.
I will never forget this awful time,
as I grieve over my loss.
Yet I still dare to hope
when I remember this:

The faithful love of the LORD never ends!
His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance;
therefore, I will hope in him!”

The LORD is good to those who depend on him,
to those who search for him.
So it is good to wait quietly
for salvation from the LORD.

Since I haven’t talked about Chuck Norris in quite awhile, I thought I’d show you this commercial I just saw during the Cubs game.

Little Jimmy

When I was in high school, one of my best friends caught this sketch on tape. We still don’t know what show it was from, but it is hilarious. It remains one my favorite bits of all time. Thanks to Rob for slapping it up.
