Bowden McElroy linked to these interesting study notes…
A McMaster undergraduate student discovered that the video (of a flirty) girl was able to lower men’s opinions of their wives and girlfriends on 17 different characteristics simply by smiling, playing with her hair and gazing deeply into the camera. The flirty girl had only average looks and was answering mundane questions.
Sorry guys, but it takes a lot more than a wink to have the same impact on women.
Neither a video of a flirty man nor a bored man changed 79 women’s opinions of their mates.

Jesus loves Britney Spears and so does her mom

I just read the most amazing piece on Revolution 21′s Blog for the People regarding Britney Spears. Here’s an excerpt:
Here’s what you won’t read in our celebrity-obsessed media’s non-stop coverage of Britney Spears’ descent into madness: Britney Spears was somebody’s little girl. She — such as she is — still is somebody’s daughter.
And as she descends into the alcohol-, sex- and psychically fueled hellfire of her own making — and as scads of American websites, newspapers, tabloids and magazines make s***loads of money chronicling every aspect of the destruction of a human being . . . turning profound tragedy into spectator sport — those who love her grieve. Those who love her want her to just stop it, stop it now.
But they are utterly powerless to make her stop it…
SOMEWHERE, some poor little rich girl’s mama cries.
This article really struck me. Beyond this for me is the thought that Britney is super valuable to God. Sometimes it’s hard for us to remember:
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
This verse is talking about Jesus’ return. He is not being slow about his promise to return, rather he is being patient. Who is he being patient for?
Christians.
Peter wrote this letter to Christians! He is being patient, waiting for us to share the Gospel with all people so they won’t be destroyed.
He does not want Britney to be destroyed.
He does not want Kim Il Jong to be destroyed.
He does not want the guy who cut us off in traffic to be destroyed.
And so he is patient…waiting for us to get off of our duffs…waiting for us.

There is a great set of articles over at Washington Post’s On Faith. They basically asked this question to of a bunch of “experts.”
“Why do you think some religions have regarded sex as sacred while others have regarded it as a sin?”
Their answers, as well as the comments on each post are definitely worth reading.
Here are a few responses:
Sex is seen as sacred or sinful perhaps for the same reason. Sex has power. Of course, not all sex does. There is great sex, mediocre sex, and bad sex, just as there is great music, mediocre music, and bad music.
Great lovers, great artists, great thinkers, and the mystics of all religions know that there is an experience of the sacred that cannot be confined to tradition or domesticated by convention. Such people are dangerous and subversive to the way things are.
- Marcus Borg
Sex is like fire: Necessary for life, very powerful, but very dangerous if misused. Religions, however, reflect and often distort life’s various realities.
In the Judaeo-Christian tradition, the double reality of sex is reflected in the high and central view of marriage, which is meant to be like the hearth at the centre of the home in an old-style homestead: The place of warmth, the place of cooking, the place where the fire can be enjoyed and effective without burning the house down.
-NT Wright
Catholics believe marriage is a sacrament. Since the sacraments give grace to the believer with their practice, the renewal of marital love in the physical act of sex is – for Catholics — a source of divine grace. The more times you have sex, the more grace you both receive.
-Anthony M. Stevens-Arroyo
Sex is simply (and, for humans, not so simply) a part of the natural world. It is good and pleasurable insofar as it is engaged in by partners who wish other other well, bad and painful insofar as it is an instrument of power and domination rather than a source of mutual joy.
-Susan Jacoby
The biblical pattern is that sex expressed within marriage between a husband and wife is holy, healthy, and good. Sex expressed elsewhere falls short of God’s intention and violates His command.
Sex is such a powerful reality that, left to our own devices, we are likely to fall into patterns of gross misunderstanding. We may, for example, make sex an object of worship or denigrate it as inherently sinful. It is neither, of course — but it takes a revealed instruction from God to make this known.
-Al Mohler

So I have been making a concerted effort to Categorize my posts better. So today, I downloaded Batch Categories to clean stuff up.
I really wish I had payed attention to this line:
Please back up your wp_post2cat table before doing anything rash with this plugin: it will almost certainly work, but better safe than sorry.
Yeah…now all of my posts are uncategorized. And 800 posts seem to be missing. Nice.
[BIZARRE UPDATE: The posts are back, but now even though I have some categories set up, everything is still in one category. Weird]
