Hey, all.
Sorry for the blogging silence over the last few days. Grace and I, along with Steve and Evy, Paul and Ann, and Dan and Suzanne were at a pastor’s conference in the Ozarks. We were at a place called Tan-Tar-A. It was an incredibly refreshing time. Here are some random thoughts from the time.
Random Thought One: One of the cool things is we went through the book of Titus at the conference, and I am teaching on Titus this fall. I have already done a ton of reading and praying through Titus, and this was the first time I have ever heard it taught through. I got a few good notes I will add (steal).
Random Thought Two: Here is a verse Herschel Martindale shared on one of the tangents he went on:
Hebrews 12:14-15 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
He made a connect in this passage that when a “poisonous root of bitterness” grows inside us, we fail to receive the grace of God. That was an interesting point to chew on, since I have a tendency to allow bitterness toward certain people to grow in me. Have to chew on that one some more.
Random Thought Three: I was reading through 2 Corinthians on my own and a verse really struck me.
2 Corinthians 1:24 But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.
This is so different from any other translation of this verse I have ever read, so it caught me off guard. It made me think about how on debatable issues, I should teach with strong conviction, but not legalism. The minute I force my conviction (the “how” of putting faith into practice) on someone and make it a requirement of their walk with the Lord, I have crossed the line.
Random Thought Four: The best part of our trip was hanging out with our team. I am so excited to be teamed up with these guys and we had tons of time together. At night, we would sit around Grace’s and my room and drink beer and girly drinks. We would talk about the Word, about Riverview, about national things, about what God is teaching us. It was awesome.
One afternoon, we rented a skiboat and hit the lake. It was amazing. Here are some pictures we took out there, as well as a video of my wife flying off her inner-tube. Enjoy.
