Blogging and the Wisdom of Solomon

//MOOD: Good

//ITUNES:
Feel Good Time from the album “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” by Pink

Here is a great piece from Challies Dot Com called Blogging and the Wisdom of Solomon. He basically applied the wisdom of the book of Proverbs to bloggers. The article is much longer than what I am posting here. I am only posting his headers and the accompanying verses. For an in depth treatment, read his whole post.

Great stuff to think about.

Think before posting.

“Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him (29:20).”

Avoid the foolish.

“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself (26:4).”

Help the foolish.

“Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes (26:5).”

Know when to walk away.

“If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet (29:9).”

Watch what you read.

“Like one who binds the stone in the sling is one who gives honor to a fool (26:8).”

Be humble.

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger and not your own lips (27:2).” “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor (29:23).”

Avoid the arrogant.

“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him (26:12).”

Mind your own business.

“Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears (26:17).”

Don’t be a troublemaker.

“Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling (26:27).”

Examine why you write.

“A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike (27:14).”

Be careful what you teach.

“Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, and the blameless will have a godly inheritance (28:10).”

Be a friend.

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy” (27:6).

Meditate upon what you write.

“As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man” (27:19).

Walk with the Lord.

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered (28:26).”

Reality Church

//MOOD: Wow

//ITUNES: The Rub Of Love from the album “Chagall Guevara” by
Chagall Guevara

I just read the most amazing article. Dan Kimball wrote it and it’s called Reality Church? It’s about the stages many of us go through regarding our churches.

I seriously can’t excerpt it here, because that would be dang near impossible to do without skewing the message. So instead, I am going to quote his caveat he added after the article. Hopefully it will make you want to read the whole thing.

* Due to the rather large amount of emails I am getting from people about this post and asking questions - I wanted to say this is not an entirely real situation, but one made up from lots of different experiences and stories. Nor do I think everyone has to go through all these stages. Nor do I think everyone always ends up back at their original church. Sadly, some churches should never be returned to!

I am just thinking of the churches that people leave that really are OK, and just trying their best and making some mistakes along the way. Pondering some of the unrealistic expectations we make sometimes of church and church leaders. I’m glad it is stirring up some thinking and from the emails, sure seems like a lot of people have personally experienced some of these stages. - Dan

Bottom line: if you are a church leader, or attender, or member, or you have ever been to a church or left a church or started a church, you need to read this article.

Well done, Dan.

Click here if you missed the link earlier. And do it now so you don’t forget. Maybe I’ll add this to my podcast lineup. I may even try to interview Dan on this one.

“…she thinks our 30-something year old pastor with a wife and kids is pretty hot.”

//ITUNES: I Would Drown from the album “With Abandon” by
Chasing Furies

This past weekend at Riverview was amazing. I don’t know what else to say about it. We spent time sharing our stories with each other. We remembered what God has done.

One of the things we did was have people write down their stories and we compiled all of these into a bunch of books that we are going to have in the lobby. Just now, I spent some time reading through one of the books. I am blown away at what God is doing in people’s lives.

Here is one of the first stories I flipped to:

God is good, all the time.

About a year ago, my best friend committed suicide. This past summer was the hardest time in my life. I was in daily agony. Christ revealed to me his love through the cross. It was through that simple and beautiful piece of wood that I found a saviour who knew my pain because he had experienced pain. He knew my lonely heart, my tears and my sleepless nights, because he had lived them.

He gave me hope for a future and love for others.

And a purpose for my life.

And JOY!!!

Amazing.

Mark Driscoll Apologizes

//MOOD: Impressed

//ITUNES: Mary And The baby Elvis from the album “Eighty Eight” by
Seventy Sevens

One of the hallmarks of a man or woman of God is how they respond to reproof. That’s why I was super impressed after reading this on Mark Driscoll’s blog today. I love the last paragraph.

Some years ago I was part of a team that traveled around the country speaking about issues pertaining to the truth of the gospel, the condition of the culture, and the mission of the church to incarnate the gospel in the culture. I eventually left that team for a variety of practical and theological reasons. Since that time, much of that team has remained together and has evolved into the Emergent stream of the emerging church. Perhaps the best-known leaders in that network are Brian McLaren and Doug Pagitt.

Since leaving that team I have been increasingly concerned about some of the theological conversations that are taking place, which has led to frustration and anger on my part. The result was an email I fired off in angry haste to the “Out of Ur” blog in response to a piece by Brian Mclaren in Leadership journal on his pastoral response to the homosexual issue. In short, I took some cheap shots at Brian and Doug.

A godly friend once asked me an important question: “What do you want to be known for?” I responded that solid theology and effective church planting were the things that I cared most about and wanted to be known for. He kindly said that my reputation was growing as a guy with good theology, a bad temper, and a foul mouth. This is not what I want to be known for. And after listening to the concerns of the board members of the Acts 29 Church Planting Network that I lead, and of some of the elders and deacons at Mars Hill Church that I pastor, I have come to see that my comments were sinful and in poor taste. Therefore, I am publicly asking for forgiveness from both Brian and Doug because I was wrong for attacking them personally and I was wrong for the way in which I confronted positions with which I still disagree. I also ask forgiveness from those who were justifiably offended at the way I chose to address the disagreement. I pray that you will accept this posting as a genuine act of repentance for my sin.

In the end, I do not want my tone and style to get in the way of important discussions and kingdom work. So, my intention is to lean into God’s empowering grace to become a holy man who demonstrates greater self-control. In the future, my prayer is that I could continue to speak with pithy edginess and candor that is also marked by grace and appropriate words. I obviously failed this time. Please forgive me and pray for me.

Quote of the Day

//MOOD: Decent

//NOISE: Almost none

(Via A Cognizant Discourse)

The reason for not going out and sinning all you like is the same as the reason for not going out and putting your nose in a slicing machine: its dumb, stupid, and no fun. Some individual sins may have pleasure still attached to them because of the residual goodness of the realities they are abusing: adultery can indeed be pleasant and tying one on can amuse. But betrayal, jealousy, love grown cold, and the gray dawn of the morning after are nobody’s idea of a good time.
