Church at the Bar

A friend sent me this note. I liked it:
I have this random thought that I thought you would appreciate. I was at Mac’s bar last night…listening to the Mobius Band. Very good I might add. Anyways, as I was listening, and taking in the music, I remembered years ago, when you had described to me your vision of someday having church in a bar type setting, and last night it really made sense.
My thought wasn’t that church SHOULD be like this, but church COULD be like this, and it would be amazing if it was. The band playing is kind of like the postal service, with guitar tracks played over electronic beats. And while I was listening, I couldn’t help feeling that If I could have had words to sing to God at that moment, it would have been awesome. In a bar, after a beer, smoking a cigar, with non-believers around me, I was still able to connect with God and worship him.
I know this email is so completely random, but it really made me wonder what types of things are totally acceptable to God, but for some reason we don’t do because we are still held up in tradition. This isn’t supposed to be a rant against traditional church thought, but rather, I just wanted to express my excitement over how creative God allows us to be when we want to follow his commands of worshipping him, and teaching, and community. It is so awesome the freedom he gives us, and last night I was really excited with that thought. Like I said, it’s not that church SHOULD be like that, but like church COULD be like that.
