Another Quote of the Day

“We must never look to what we think is the ‘Spirit’s voice in culture’ when it contradicts the text of scripture. Rather, we must evaluate cultural insights against the backdrop of biblical truth–not the other way around. Though insights from culture may challenge us to evaluate historic interpretations of scripture, these insights must not drive the process. If they do, we’re in danger of making judgments that are out of harmony with God’s revealed will in the Word of God.”

{ MOOD: Academic | ITUNES: “Oye Como Va” – Carlos Santana }
“We are not the first generation since the early church to seek to be formed into the community of Chirst in the world. This heritage offers examples of previous attempts to fulfll the theological mandate, from which we can learn. Looking at the past alerts us to some of the pitfalls we should avoid, some of the land mines that could trip us up, and some of the cul-de-sacs and blind alleys that are not worth our exploration.”

Headstrong and fiesty. You have a mind of your own that’s full of romantic dreams about the world around you. Exploring exotic places is your ultimate dream, and although you can be a little naive you’ll realize that there is something to be gained from your family’s wisdom.
Jesse and Jesus

{ MOOD: Thrilled | CD: Kid’s Christmas CD }
Jesse asked me, “What is Jesus going to do when he comes back?”
This requires a little back story. Emma had announced at dinner, “It would be great if Jesus would come to Earth again.” I explained that he was going to. So Jesse stewed on it for an hour and then asked his question.
“He’s going to set up a Kingdom where he will be King for 1000 years.”
“Then what?”
“He’s going to make new heavens and a new earth.”
PAUSE
“Is it going to be as nice as this one?”
“Better. The bible says your eyes can’t see, your ears can’t hear, and your mind can’t imagine what God has in store for you and that includes this new world.”
“Cool…will he live with us?”
“Yup.”
“For how long?”
“Forever.”
JESSE RUNS DOWNSTAIRS.
“Emma! Guess what Jesus is going to do when he gets back?”
And then he explained it to her and Ethan. I came downstairs to see them jumping around excited that Jesus is coming back and they get to live with him forever.

Thanks to my friend Tom for these parodies. They are a bit long but they do a good job lambasting everyone involved in “Postmodern” churches.

XMAS

It seems to be cool to be cynical.
It seems even cooler to be cynical about Christmas.
It seems to be the epitome of cool to be cynical about Christmas decorations.
I guess I am only “cool.” I may be cynical, but I love Christmas and I love Christmas decorations. This feels like part of a 12 step program admitting this, but it is true. Now, granted, some Christmas decorations are way over the top. But I like a classy, simple, Christmas decoration.
Why do I bring this up?
Because for the first time in 4 years, we have Christmas lights on our house. And I like it. It is only 4 feet of lights on a simple garland over the door, but gol’ darn it, it is Christmas decorations. And I like it.
You can see our tree through the window, too. And I like it.
My Christmas lights and I are out of the closet.
