Quarters
Jan 30, 2004 Uncategorized
The Michigan state quarters were supposed to be released on January 26,2004, but the United States Treasury has announced they are recalling the new Michigan quarters.
“We are recalling all of the new Michigan quarters that were recently issued,” Undersecretary Russell Shackelford said in a press conference Monday. “This comes in the wake of numerous reports to this agency that the quarters will not work in parking meters, toll booths, vending machines, pay phones, or other coin-operated devices.”
“We believe the problem lies in a design flaw,” said Shackelford.
The winning design for the Michigan quarter was submitted by a Yooper.
“Apparently, the duct tape holding the two dimes and nickel together keeps jamming in the coin-operated devices.”
Winter Fun

So we got totally shmooked with snow today. Serious snow. I don’t know how much, but it is a lot. We shovelled and it was insane. By the time I made it to the bottom of the driveway, the top was covered by an inch or so. Crazy. Here are a few thoughts I had today about snow:
It makes things quiet
I know this is probably stupid, but I was amazed at how quiet the world was today. I was getting gas and all these cars were driving by and yet it was super quiet because they were on a huge cushion of snow. It was kinda surreal.
It can stop everything
We are so vulnerable. With weather stuff, technogy, etc, we are so vulnerable. If a big blizzard hits or satellites go down, etc., things can totally change. I don’t think Americans could even find food if grocery stores were closed. We would just eat tons of snow and die.
Anyhoo, on a lighter note, here’s some pics:

If only we could return to the golden days of Will and Dave love. And to think the price to pay for this unity would be a measly five dollars.
Amsterdam
Jan 23, 2004 Uncategorized
Well, I am taking a team to Amsterdam in April. We are right in the middle to support raising and planning right now. Excitement city. We are building a website for info on this right now, so I will let you know when we have that rolling.
In the meantime, we are building our prayer and finance teams right now. If you would like to be on either, would you drop me a note? If you jump on either team, we will drop you periodic emails with prayer requests and updates. Then, while we are in Amsterdam, we will send you daily updates. How cool is that?
Trouble In Paradise
Jan 21, 2004 Uncategorized

This is a happy picture of Dave and Will dancing back when all was good. Well, apparently there is trouble in paradise. From Will’s blog:
“I just want to make sure that everyone knows that Dave is welsher. Last night at Leadership Institute, he bet me $5 that I wouldn’t drink the remaining water in my gallon jug by the end of the meeting. I agreed and completed the task with time to spare…. of course I got up to go pee about 6 times. When I asked Dave for my money he said, “I’m not going to pay you.” Now, being the degenerate gambler that Dave is, I was quite surprised. Please contact Dave and encourage him to make good on his debt. By the way, Jason got in on the action, and he made good on his debt. I gave him his money back, because it just didn’t feel right taking money from a youth pastor (by definition… needs the cash), when Dave wouldn’t pay his measly $5 debt. I mean, come on, we’ve all seen Dave’s TV.”
If only I was a mom, I could find a way to shame Dave into paying…

So I think this Mars thing is very cool. You can read more about the above picture here.
I also love the controversy. My dad was telling me that the government doesn’t really want us to see the first photos from the new Mars rover, but you can see one of them here.
Continuing On

On the same thread as the last post, Read this piece. Here, for those of you who are lazy, is an excerpt:
“…The basic problem with the statement is that it assumes that the problem in communicating to postmoderns is one of style. This is the problem he saw when he planted Saddleback–Boomers found traditional evangelical services boring so they stopped coming. Seeker sensitive services changed that–creating spiritual entertainment—and boomer’s started attending church again. Warren is mistaken to think that the problem we have in communicating the Gospel is in its style. [Warren] writes:
But whatever is in style now will inevitably be out of style soon, and the cycles of change are getting shorter and shorter, aided by technology and the media. New styles and preferences, like fashions, are always emerging. Let me give you a word of advice. Never attach your church to a single style – you’ll soon be passé, and outdated.
We stopped listening to preachers like Warren not because of style–but because we fundamentally view the world differently. Warren has codified the discipleship process into four stages; the emergent church is unwilling to codify it and accepts the openness and wonder of the process. This is not an issue of style.

Purpose Driven
Jan 19, 2004 Uncategorized
What do you guys think of this article? This paragraph jumped out at me:
There is a lot out there when you search for Rick Warren or The Purpose Driven Life on the internet. The book, and its “40 days of purpose” church campaign, is the hottest trend in Evangelicalism today. Russell Moore over at the Henry Institute recognizes that Evangelicals don’t care about influential theological issues (like open-theism), and find their convictions well articulated by writers like Tim Lahaye, Bruce Wilkinson, and Rick Warren. This, of course, has roused the ire of many other Evangelicals not fond of the mainstream. (Emphasis Noel’s)
Another follow-up read would be Russel Moore’s at his blog.

Grace’s Brain
Jan 16, 2004 Uncategorized
A few people have asked about Grace’s brain picture, so here’s the scoop. She had an MRI for an eye thing she has going on. Good news is, it is not a tumor. That was the biggest concern. We still don’t know what is going on, but there are two major options and she has had one appointment with a Nuero Opthomologist and has another one in a few weeks. A lot of people didn’t know about this because she wanted me to keep it low key. That, my friends, is the deal. And I have another 200 or so pictures of her brain if you are interested.
