I am swamped getting our Saturday Night service ready. I am not posting a lot because of this. Please pray for me and I will be back on in very short order.

Just got done reading this great parody. It was a quick, one-sitting book. Nicely done. Slams a bit much on dispensationalism, but I can laugh at myself.

So I started reading Robert

So I started reading Robert Webber’s book, The Younger Evangelicals last year but got distracted and never made it more than 10 or so pages in. I just found it again today and begin to give it a looksy. Here is an interesting table he created. He is attempting to show some of the differences between the moderns (traditional and pragmatic
evangelicals) and the postmodern (the younger evangelicals). Please hit me with your thoughts on this. I have been chewing on this stuff lately, especially
with our new service coming this fall at Riv.

Dude. I think I will

Dude. I think I will never get work done again: Pacman - Flash Game

So, today’s thoughts are mostly

So, today’s thoughts are mostly in the form of pictures. The first two are of my heals. Jesse said the other day, “Dad, I think you’re feet are going to break.” I am going to try this Dr Scholls’ Heal Cream. I know you will care so much about this, so I will keep you updated:

The second picture is from my daughter’s lesson in church yesterday. Look how happy Jesus appears to be at the sending of the plagues. This struck me as a but odd. It’s also weird that the kids appear to be helping him. At least the artist was racially sensitive…

A lot of people have

A lot of people have been asking me what I read. Although I can’t make any promises, I will try to drop a few thoughts on here about what I am reading and my humble opinions about the books. I may try to get a “books” section up here sometime soon, but (once again), no promises. BTW, email me if you have any books you think I should read.

So, before I tell you about the book I just read, a small commentary:

If I hear “Friends” by Michael W. Smith again, I may just go postal. And yet, that’s what I had to be subjected to when my wife wanted to watch the Dove Awards this year. It just seems like “Christian Music” has become an irrelevant and nepotistic genre. I find myself increasingly bored with not only the music but the stories of the Christians artists you read online and in other print.

Maybe that’s why this book was a breath of fresh air:

In “Spiritual Journeys,” the authors didn’t tackle cliché artists like MWS, etc. They took the unconventional approach of discussing the spiritual lives of P Diddy, Lenny Kravitz, Moby, and the like.

This book helped me look at some of the pre-conceived notions I hold about musical icons and their art. Reading tales of P Diddy’s complex and complicated spiritual story did bring thoughts of King David (of the Bible’s Old Testament) to mind. And although I am not sure I would have had the guts to make the comparison, this book did. Wading through the almost schizophrenic beliefs of Moby made my head spin, but it also made me think long and hard about my own enigmatic beliefs. It made me think that maybe presenting my dysfunctional viewpoints to the world wouldn’t make me hypocritical, but honest.

All things told, “Spiritual Journeys” stretched me in a great many ways. It’s about time someone wrote this book.

Someone just sent me this

Someone just sent me this picture from HSLT. I thought it was pretty cool. Of course, they didn’t give me their name, so I have no idea who it was.

I started a study of

I started a study of what the New Testament has to say about Christ in March. I just got done this morning. This is by no means an exhaustive study, but I have paraphrased everytime the word “Christ” appears in the NT. Here are the new things I came across today:

  • If we are willing to suffer for Him, we have decided to stop sinning.
  • Trials will make us partners with Him.
  • We will share in His glory when it is displayed to all the world.
  • After we have suffered, He will restore, support, and strengthen us, placing us on a firm foundation.
  • The more we grow in our relationship with Him, the more we will become useful and productive in our knowledge of Him.
  • When we escape the ways of the world by learning about Him and then get tangled up with sin again, we are worse off than before.
  • He is the Word of life.
  • He lives in the light of God’s presence.
  • He cleanses us from every sin.
  • He pleads our case before God.
  • He pleases God completely.
  • We should live our lives as He did.
  • Anyone who says He is not the Christ is the antichrist.
  • If we continue to live in fellowship with Him, we will be full of courage and not shrink back from Him in shame.
  • He is returning.
  • He is pure.
  • When we do what is right, it is only because we are righteous as He is righteous.
  • He gave up His life for us.
  • We can face God with confidence on the day of judgment because we are like Christ here in this world.
  • Everyone who believes that He is the Christ is a child of God.
  • We defeat the evil world by trusting Him to give the victory.
  • He was revealed as God’s Son by His baptism in water and by shedding His blood on the cross.
  • He has come.
  • He has given us understanding so that we can know the true God.
  • He is eternal life.
  • If you wander beyond the teaching of Christ, you will not have fellowship with God.
  • If you continue in the teaching of Christ, you will have fellowship with both Him and the Father.
  • Those who say God’s forgiveness allows us to live immoral lives have turned against Him.
  • He is the first to rise from the dead.
  • He is the commander of all the rulers of the world.
  • He has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.

Here’s what I recommend. Click here to get the entire study. Print this study out, find a spot alone and read it straight through (outloud if you can pull it off). Pray before you start that God would make the truth about His Son very real to you in the process. Email me at noel@noelheikkinen.com and let me know how this time goes for you. For me it was amazing!

Check out this interesting article. Here’s an excerpt:

Not long after 9/11, evangelist Franklin Graham stated publicly that in his opinion Muslims worship a god different from the one worshipped by Christians or Jews. The national debate set off by those remarks continues today.

This discussion is limited to these faiths because each believes there is only one God, and all three trace their roots to the Prophet Abraham.

The major point of contention is between Christianity and Islam and how each faith perceives God: Christians say they see God as more personal and loving than the God that Muslim’s worship.

Another point of difference is Jesus; neither Islam nor Judaism recognizes Jesus as God, as do most Christians.
