So God taught me something

So God taught me something cool at HSLT this year. We had this commitment service thing on Thursday night called “Cliff.” Basically, it was a totally non-technical service. The great and powerful Dan Price led a few accoustic worship songs and then I was to give a message designed to cause the students to make some changes in their life. I really felt like God wanted to do something cool. This is where God began to hit me. I had placed this expectation on God that if he was going to move greatly that night, I would have to be super “connected” with him. I set aside my afternoon to pray and read the Word. And you know what? It didn’t work. The Word was boring to me. My prayers were just words hurled at the sky. There was no spectacular connection with God. Nada. Zip. Zilch. There was only one word that adequately described my afternoon: boring. In fact, that night as the session was going on I still felt bored. Nothing changed. I watched as lots of people made huge commitments, cried, etc. And I was bored.

God taught me that he doesn’t need me. He’s going to use me, but he can and will handle how he will use me. I don’t need to “feel” connected to be used.

Oh, and that night God did something else that was pretty cool. Before the service started, 6 people in less than 10 minutes came up to me and told me how God had used me in their lives. And they all used almost the same exact words! It was like God was letting me know he loved me and it had nothing to do with me trying to manufacture some emotional experience with Him.
