My friend Jason forwarded me an interesting article. After reading it, I followed the rabbit trail to the responses of other writers. It is on this devilish word we are all so glad to hate “Postmodernism.”
First, I encourage you to read “Nomo Pomo, a Postmodern Rant” by Kevin Miller. Then read “Is Pomo Nomo” by Chris Seay. If you feel like doing neither, I’ll just give you my thoughts on this whole thing.
On one side of the fence:
We are called to be in the world, but not of it. I think that includes any world: African, Asian, Modern, Postmodern, Greek, Jewish, whatever. We are entering a different world. We must understand it (like Neo reading the code) and live in it, sharing Christ in a (*shudder*) relevant way.
On the other side of the fence:
We can easily embrace a cultural theory and elevate it above the Word of God. Worse even than not understanding our culture are those who accept its tenants without filtering them through the Word. I think there are great things we learned in the Modern era, just as there are great things to be learned from the medievel, classic, roman, etc eras. Unfortunately, we tend to like to demolish the old, good and all, as we build something new. I think there are definitely, in the words of Jesus, new treasures we can add to the old.

I am typing this with one hand. That’s because my sick 2 yr old is sitting on my lap and he is so weak he will fall over if I don’t hold him up with my other hand. I so much want him not to be sick. If I could take it on myself and watch him run around again, I would. But he doesn’t know that. He just knows he feels like crap and he doesn’t know why. We have a language issue. I can’t tell him why he feels so bad and he can’t tell me about his hurts. In a feable manner he can point at the sink when he wants water or hold his tummy to tell me when it hurts. This is so much like me and God. I am so feable He has to hold me up sometimes. I can barely coomunicate to him and have a hard time understanding Him a lot of the time. But He loves me so much He has taken away my sickness. I wish I could do that for Ethan.

This is weird. A bunch of people have told me I should Mind Map when I am studying. I have essentially ignored them cuz it sounded weird and new-agy. Well, I found this site today about mind mapping and discovered I already do a lot of when I am studying. I learned a few more tricks on this site. If you are a student of anything (The Bible?) this may be helpful to you. Or maybe not.

So I just started a tour of churches. Basically, I (and a bunch of friends) are checking out some churches to learn, etc. Our first trip was to Genesis the church. Steve Norman kicked out an awesome message on 1 Corinthians 8. Very convicting. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to give you the message (they don’t have them on their site). So, instead, read 1 Corinthians 8 and pretend like you are convicted. Thanks.

Just got back from our

Just got back from our annual pilgrimage to Greektown. This is a yearly gathering of Riverview guys from years gone by. I love hearing the stories from our history as well as hearing how everyone is doing these days. Sometimes it’s encouraging, sometimes it’s cautioning, always it’s fun. We always eat at the Parthenon and then head down to a bakery down the street for a sugar buzz (it goes well with the lamb buzz from dinner). This year, Rob and I did something different. Instead of going to the bakery, we crossed the street and went to the casino. Very interesting. Lots of people just throwing quarters (or tokens….whatever) into slot machines and people here and there at card games. A lot of people were in a daze, just popping quarters. I thought, “this is fun?” Then a lady won a couple grand playing poker. That’s what they were all there for. The chance (slim as it may be) to win big. Me, I lost $4 in about 15 seconds and quit for the night. I guess the experience made me kinda sad. I’m not sure why. I guess I wish all the people there were living for something bigger than that.
